Chapter 8.2: Destiny (1)

Zhao Xiaokui had no idea who those mysterious people were or what they had done to the parking lot after she had left.

In Shen Zhifei’s car, she was leaning back in the passenger seat. She was reminiscing about her fight with her eyes closed. It was her first fight after her soul had returned to her body.

No matter how much time passed, she couldn't get her nerves to calm down. The thrill was still there.

‘That vampire didn’t have any rank.’ She had realized it while fighting the vampire. 'It must have recently transformed, or perhaps its bloodline wasn't strong enough.'

‘It must be a greenhorn. Yet I had to spend so much time dealing with it…’ Zhao Xiaokui couldn’t help but shook her head.

Zhao Xiaokui fell silent once more than she remembered the fight with the rookie vampire Zhao Xiaokui. Her fighting abilities and spiritual strength were clearly lacking.

She wasn't a natural fighter. She made it to adulthood in the mermaid world not because she was skilled at fighting but because she had fought with all her might.

‘Failure means death.’ She had only this thought in her head whenever she fought. It was her motto.

Still, it wasn't an easy ride. Not that the other mermaids didn't want to kill her; it was just that they didn't want to pay the price of killing her.

If it wasn’t a crushing victory, they were unwilling to suffer any injury that could become a fatal crisis in the future. After all, no one wanted to fight till death.

‘It’s a good thing that the vampire wasn’t too powerful.’ In her heart, Zhao Xiaokui sighed. It was a rough one. Fortunately, she was able to crush it with pure strength.

‘If its fighting abilities were a little better, or it’s a little more mature,’ Thinking about it, a chill went down her spine. She dared not to think about it anymore.

Vampires have an innate ability to live a long life. Those who were able to survive long enough grew to be overwhelmingly powerful.

‘Either it was born not too long ago,’ Zhao Xiaokui reflected on her most recent fight. ‘Or it had never spent time on developing its fighting skills. Otherwise, it would have been difficult to predict the outcome of their fight.’

“For today’s incident," The car left the dimly lit rod and moved onto the brightly lit highway. Shen Zhifei added, "Thank you."

The majority of people are terrified of the dark. To them, the bright light gave a strong sense of security. Shen Zhifei was no exception. Her taut back relaxed a little.

It was only then that she realized her back shirt was completely soaked in cold sweat and clinging to her back.

“You don't have to thank me. Take it as a thank you for looking after me today.” Her smile contained a hint of self-pity, “It’s not like I have money to pay you back.”

It was the truth. Zhao Xiaokui had assumed that as an artist, she should have hundreds of thousands of dollars, if not millions. Right? No.

She had double-checked her bank accounts and discovered that the total amount of money on all of her cards did not exceed four digits.

She discovered the reason in her agent's chat record. In the last few days, she's been at the top of the most popular searches.

*Zhao Zijin: Crisis of the unmarried couple, Rong Zhen and Shen Zhifei.*

The story was widely circulated and had a significant impact on her reputation. Her public image, which her company had worked so hard to establish, had been shattered.

Many of her sponsors wanted to terminate their contracts, and they wanted compensation for liquidated damages.

Her company, on the other hand, had already said their goodbyes without even meeting her.

[Lazybug: I am a little confused. The raw was ‘□□家’. Something was wrong with the raw. It could be family, but I believe the author meant to say the company. I have read none of the subsequent chapters, so I can't say for sure.]

She was poor when she died, and she was still poor now that she had returned. She was, however, unconcerned about the situation.

“You are a brave one, aren’t you? You didn't appear to be scared.” Zhao Xiaokui couldn't stop herself from inquiring.

In her eyes, Shen Zhifei seemed to be too calm. She didn’t react as someone who had never seen those transcended species before.

“No, I was afraid. Terrified. I wasn't as composed as you believe.” Shen Zhifei sighed, “I am just very good at restraining my expressions.”

“That thing...” Shen Zhifei continued. “What the hell was that thing?”

Shen Zhifei didn’t see the vampire. She only knew Zhao Xiaokui was fighting a mythical humanoid creature. The vampire had already turned to ash by the time she could see him.

“Vampire. The type of creature you see on TV. They have a pair of fangs and feed on human blood. They can't, however, transform into a bat. After all, morphing a human body into another animal is extremely difficult.”

“Vampire…” Shen Zhifei was perplexed. She had always assumed that creatures like that only existed in popular culture. “They are genuine! They've always seemed fake to me.”

“I also thought so.” Zhao Xiaokui shrugged, “This is the first time I have seen a vampire.”

“First time?! Didn’t look like it,” Shen Zhifei said, surprised. “I assumed you'd seen quite a few.”

“Of course not. It's the first time for me. It was also my first time getting into such a serious fight.” Her pride reflected in her smile, “However, if I met it again, I would be able to beat it without taking a hit.”

The light turned red. Shen Zhifei stopped the car at the crossroad. She turned her head to find Zhao Xiaokui’s face full of bruises.

Her fingers on the steering wheel trembled. She asked after a pause, “Does it hurt?”

"It's fine." Zhao Xiaokui shook her head, smiling, "compared to the pain I'm feeling all over my body, this is nothing."

“Are you not... feeling well?” She had no difficulty comprehending what Shen Zhifei was saying.

“No, it’s all right. It'll take a while.”

The car rolled as the red turned green. As an awkward silence filled the car, neither of them said anything.

The night deepened. Zhao Xiaokui leaned back in the passenger seat and hugged her legs. “It's nothing,” she said, sighing inwardly. "You don't have to be concerned about it. I have lived in this world for 18 years, and it is the first time I have encountered something like this.”

She made a mistake and said something she shouldn't have, but none of them noticed.

“Things like this are extremely rare. The probability is almost the same as an ordinary person encountering a plane crash. Or the risk of getting lung cancer because of smoking. The chance is so slim that most people won’t even encounter such a thing in their entire lifetime.”

[Lazybug: The author didn’t check the numbers.]

Zhao Xiaokui's voice abruptly came to a halt. Her face turned ugly as she realized the problem with her words.

‘The theory of transcending concentration and scattering.’ She had heard both theories before but had never experienced them.

The transcend concentration theory states that people with extraordinary abilities will always congregate and collide uncontrollably.

One can also apply this theory to extraordinary events.

After witnessing a once-in-a-lifetime event, a person will continue to witness extraordinary events in the future. It is impossible to avoid it.

The possibility of this incident is far greater than an ordinary person encountering an extraordinary event for the first time.

When Zhao Xiaokui reflected on the situation, he quickly realized another problem. Shen Zhifei had already experienced two extraordinary incidents today, besides meeting her.

And if she included the water ghost incident, Shen Zhifei experienced three extraordinary events in one day.

The theory of transcendental scattering meant there would be constant transcendent events occurring around people with transcendent power.

These events might or might not have a causal relationship with transcendent, but they would always end up with a linear connection.

‘The Doctrine of Fate,’ Zhao Xiaokui had heard about it from the mermaid world, but she had never believed it.

She didn't believe in the inevitability of Destiny. However, the events of today reminded her that just because she didn't believe something didn't mean it was false.

"Destiny, destiny..." She mumbled. After being played by fate, she couldn’t help but sigh in her heart.
