The man in the brown jacket led the team of six. Under the shield's protection, they slowly walked into the parking lot.
The [Dao Shield*] was the result of China's long history of transcending power cultivation. It was a matter of life and death for [Night Keeper**], who guarded the night and fought the transcendent creatures.
[Lazybug: *You can also call it a Taoist shield. Please let me know if you have a better alternative.
**It was the same for the Nightman. Other possible meanings include Night-bearer and Night-keeper. Please comment which one you prefer. (Edit: Night Keeper)]
The specially made leather boots didn’t make any unnecessary sound. However, they didn’t dare to be careless and walked along the wall with solemn expressions.
They didn’t find any unusual movements. Neither a trap nor a sudden attack was waiting for them. The expected gory scene didn’t appear.
They only discovered a few unconscious people and a pile of human-shaped ashes not far away. Their arrival soon destroyed the silence that enveloped the parking lot.
“The place is safe.”
“Vampire. It was a vampire. Didn’t anyone bring a shovel?” Enquired Zhang Hongyi, standing in front of the human-shaped ashes. “Store all the ashes and send them to the [Night Watcher*] for examination, along with those clothes.”
[Lazybug: The author spelled ‘Nightman’ and ‘Night watcher’ differently. I have checked.]
“Are you suspecting the Dark Council?” One of them asked, frowning.
“No, it shouldn’t be them. The Chinese authorities have signed an agreement with the council. Every dark council immigrant must go through the registration process. The authorities supervised them 24 hours a day, seven days a week. They'd never risk doing something so obvious.”
Yes, it’s so obvious.
They can't even hold them accountable unless they have proof.
No matter how many non-aggression and mutual assistance treaties the higher authorities had signed, there were bound to be some loopholes that both parties would exploit.
As captain of the Nightman squad, Zhang Hongyi was well aware of this.
He didn't go into great detail. He moved on to check other locations after handing work to his team members.
The Woman called Hongying was standing beside a dried-up body. “Death because of excessive blood loss,” she explained to Zhang Hongyi.
[Lazybug: I thought the captain had said Lin Bai (IT guy) and Hongying (sudden appearance woman) should be on the lookout. She must have reappeared out of nowhere.]
Zhang Hongyi: "What about the others?"
“They're just unconscious,” one of his teammates replied. “There's no need to be concerned.”
Finally, Zhao Hongyi exhaled a sigh of relief. There had only been one human death.
It wasn't as if he was heartless or unconcerned about the lives lost. It's just that the fact that a transcendent creature had appeared in the city had him braced for the worst.
However, only one person died. This was already an improvement over his best-case scenario. He couldn't help but think it was a good thing there had been none more casualties.
“There was another transcendent creature. It might be the one who had killed the vampire. Take everyone with us for questioning. We need to know what had happened.”
“Lin Bai, have you checked the surveillance feed?” Zhang Hongyi pressed the communicator. “Did you come across anything?”
“Well, I have good news and bad news.” Lin Bai explained without waiting for the captain's response. “The surveillance system was turned off over two hours ago, around midnight. Someone had cut the parking lot off from the surveillance system. We also have no idea what happened after the surveillance system was disabled.”
“However, the good news is that I have located the vampire. I checked the previous CCTV footage with the photo you sent me and found a man wearing the same clothes as the vampire in the picture.”
“Shi Xinde, the patriarch of the Shi family. He was also the owner of the building. Male. 62 years old. He was also one of the few people who could disable the surveillance system.”
************
Shen Zhifei noticed that Zhao Xiaokui was not wearing any shoes when she stopped the car.
As she walked in front of Zhao Xiaokui, Zhao Xiaokui was a little puzzled, “What are you doing?”
Shi Zhifei hugged her without answering. Zhao Xiaokui was taken aback for a moment but soon snuggled into a comfortable position in Shen Zhifei’s arm.
Some people felt more comfortable when they walk by themselves. Zhao Xiaokui, on the other hand, preferred to be carried.
Shen Zhifei effortlessly carried her to the sofa. She then returned to the garage to get the food from the trunk.
Spicy crayfish, garlic oysters, char-grilled eggplant, lamb chops…
To be honest, Zhao Xiaokui has never had such a sumptuous supper in her life.
In the past, she couldn't afford it. In the mermaid world, she had no way to eat it.
For the first time, Zhao Xiaokui had enjoyed such a lavish treatment of filling the table with different delicacies. She couldn’t just stop herself from jumping on the table to devour all the delicacies.
“Wow, I feel so blessed.” She couldn't help but wonder if it had been an auspicious day.
For now, she had no intention of thinking about how she was going to survive with her pitiful amount of bank balance after she left Shen Zhifei.
She only had one thought in mind, and that was to savor every moment of happiness that came her way.
Such pure and simple happiness could easily infect people. And Shen Zhifei was no exception.
Shen Zhifei had never eaten such greasy food before, let alone in the middle of the night.
She could see Zhao Xiaokui’s lips were shimmered with oil, while her face was full of ecstasy. Such a pleasant sight induced a rare feeling of hunger inside Shen Zhifei.
When she peeled a crayfish and put it in her mouth, she discovered it was not as delicious as she had hoped.
She shifted her gaze to Zhao Xiaokui, who had remembered to turn on the television and watch a variety show while eating.
It was only then that she realized she didn’t want to eat herself. What she really wanted was to bask in the unbridled happiness and lively excitement that Zhao Xiaokui had brought.

Lazybug: The reason for not posting on Saturday is in my name. Jokes aside, I had an assignment due this morning. I sat down to write the chapter as soon as I submitted it. I apologize for the inconvenience.
--- Thanks for the chapter~ ^^.
Night-keeper is better.!
Sense of site ---> Sense of sight it is.
Am I the only one who keep thinking about the motorcycle she used to get to the auction house's parking? She left it there didn't she? And about the fact that she knew where the auction house was when it was never told to her? 0_0
Nonetheless, I like this novel! Thank you for the translation! ❤️
I personally think dao sheild is fine, but night keeper is so much cooler!!!! And don’t worry about it!!!!! Thank you for the translation!!!!
For the dao shield organization i would suggest either daoist protector or dao guardian or something like that. Sorry i can't make any better names. My chuunibyou side is already rusty after several years not using my imaginations wildly lol.
I think night keeper sounds more like a professional organization than night man, so that might be better.
